Notes: Sugriva and Vali, Vali’s Death
Rama and Sugriva sought to gain revenge for Sugriva’s wrongful
banishment from his brother Vali. Sugriva challenged Vali to a fight and the
winner of this would go on to take the throne. Vali was enraged by this challenge.
His wife Tara held him and told him to calm his wrath and to wait until he knows
what forces come against him. He was calling him to be wise and to think about
what he was about to do. She knows that Sugriva would not fight alone for he is
not strong enough. She mentions that she is afraid of Rama and Lakshman who
stand with Sugriva. She asks him to make Sugriva his heir and to end this
strife. Vali said that he does not stray from combat and that he would honor
the request made by Sugriva. The combat ensued and the two fought each other.
Sugriva fell from the sky and looked up at Rama for help. Rama’s heart was touched,
and he lent his aid. He took aim with his bow and shot an arrow into Vali. The
arrow found its mark and Vali Died.
