I have chosen for my project to do a storybook about Chiranjivi.
I have chosen this topic because the thought of immortal men interests me. I
have decided to do a retelling of three stories based on three of the
Chiranjivi. I have chosen to go with a theme of warriors. These will be stories
of revenge and fighting. The first story will be about Parashurama getting revenge
on behalf of his slain father. The second will be a story similar to the first
and will be about Ashwatthama getting revenge for his father. The last will be
a story about aid given to Rama by Jambavan. I will be looking to highlight the
weapons of each of these in their battles. I however will be mixing it up by
making each story over with different names for the characters and settings. I
will still be doing music for these stories to add a background to each. However,
for this I will do depending on the setting of each of the stories. I will probably
end up doing different places around the world with the three characters.

Week 4 Lab: Mythology
What is mythology? It is a combination of many disciplines.
There are many myths in various forms. Mythology is open to many ways of interpretation.
The definition of a myth is that it is a story. It is significant story that
has lasted a while. The story of Persephone from Greek mythology tries to
explain the seasons of the year relating the winter and planting season to the
gods. Creation myths were myths about the creation of the earth. Euhemerism
means “Myths as primitive explanations of the natural world or as time-distorted
accounts of long past historical events.” Early mythologist had to separate mythos
which is falsehood and logos which stood for truth. Mythology changed many
times another change was when it joined forces with anthropologists. Anthropologists
felt mythology fulfills in primitive society an important function that
strengthens belief and enforces morality. Freud believed that myths came from
the unconscious mind. Joseph Campbell understanding of is, “Mythology is ultimately
and always the vehicle through which the individual finds a sense of identity
and a place in the world.” Another way
to examine myths by their structure. Studying the binary nature between two
things in myths, such as man and woman, hero and villain. Joseph Campbell
developed the Hero’s Journey which is kind of a road map for a hero story. He
believed that heroes tell us something about ourselves. He drew on psychology
from different psychologists such as Freud. He also believed that all Hero myths
follow a certain rubric. There are several aspects of a checkpoint of a hero’s
story. Some of these are The Call to Adventure or maybe Supernatural Aid. There
are 17 different aspects and a combination of these makes a hero story.

Battle of Rama and Ravana, Ravana’s Death
After much fighting Shakra sends down his charioteer to aid
Rama in his fight against Ravana and retrieve Sita. Rama mounted the chariot
and was then attacked by Ravana. Ravana launched an attack with a rakshasa
weapon that spit flames at Rama. The flames turned into snakes that sought to
bite and inject venom into Rama. Thankfully Rama had a Garuda-weapon which is
helpful in fighting off Naga’s. Rama’s weapon changed into birds and devoured Ravana’s
attack. The gods descended and stood by Rama as he attacked. Rama’s attacks
pushed Ravana back and wounded him. Agastya came to Rama and told him if he
would worship the sun he would win. Rama did this and continued attacking with
his bow. He fired and arrow which but blew off one of Ravana’s ten heads. Where
one head fell another grew in its place. Rama then grabbed the weapon which
Brahma had created and attacked Ravana. Ravana died from this mortal wound to
his body, which cut him in two. After the fall of Ravana all the other rakshasa
flew away.
Characters: Rama- Vishnu’s avatar come to earth to slay
Ravana. Shakra- one of the deities that lent help to Rama in his time of need. Ravana-
evil rakshasa that took Sita from Rama.
