Reading Notes: Ramayana Part A

Dasharatha wanted to have a son. He was blessed with many things in life but not a son. He sacrificed a horse and other creatures so that he might bear a male heir. The gods promised fours sons to him for his sacrifice. In order to defeat an evil man Ravana, Vishnu is sent to earth in the body of one of Dasharatha’s four sons. There were evil demons that were trying to disturb sacrifices made to Vishvamitra that were made so Rama and his brother were sent to stop them. Rama fought and slain the demon and received celestial swords for doing so. Rama would go on to win Sita the daughter of the monarch. The monarch tested many men to see if they were worthy, but all had failed. Rama came and pulled the bow and it gave way and snapped. A loud sound resounded all around. This signified that Rama was worthy and that he should be with Sita. The time now came that a son had to be chosen to rule in Dasharatha’s stead. He was old and tired of ruling and wanted to be at peace. Dasharatha asked for the elders to come so that he might talk with them. He suggested that Rama should be the heir to the throne and wanted to know what they thought. They agreed that that was the right call to make, and that they would be all to happy to see Rama on the throne. Rama had proven himself the rightful ruler.
