Introduction: A Bit About Me

    About Me
Hello all! This is my last year at OU and I am glad to be finishing up with this class! My major is Russian Language and Literature from The University of Oklahoma. I would have to say the coolest thing about this major is that I got to meet so many interesting people and learned a lot about other cultures. Before getting into the program I did not know much about the world but after taking so many courses and studying abroad I got to see people from all walks of life! I also learned another language, which while challenging has really rewarding! From learning Russian I sought to meet others that were able to speak it or learning to speak it and just by happenstance met my fiancé! Who knew Russian would do so much for me?

I love to read and many of the books I read or either science fiction or fantasy. Something about other worldly possibilities filling my head with dreams seems to sate a childlike curiosity in me. Because of such a curiosity I am taking this class! I have taken other courses like this before such as a Mythology course at my last college but I wanted to see what knew things that could be offered by this course! I would say that I have a few favorite book series such as Cirque du Freak by Darren Shan, Dresden Files by Jim butcher, and The Sword of Truth by Terry Goodkind! I have reread each of these series multiple times, and each time feels like the first!
Lastly I guess I would like to talk a little about where I see my future headed. I plan on going to nursing school in the spring to become a RN. After which I will move somewhere up north where the weather isn’t so hot and settle down. I have always known I wanted to go into the medical field just never really knew where I fit in. After doing a bit of research and talking to others I decided that nursing was the best of all possibilities. They get the most patient exposure and get to give the most hands on care, which is what I want.

  2. Wow, Russian! My major focuses largely on modern and ancient languages, and I chose the easiest of those offered (Spanish and Latin) and still find it super challenging. So I commend you on your skills! I wonder if your significant other speaks Russian or if you happened to just have taken a class with him? My boyfriend is from Mexico, and knowing the slightest bit of his native tongue has allowed me more vibrant relationships with his family. I wonder if you can relate? Either way, your ambitions (Foreign Language/Nursing) will indeed open doors to get to know, support, and serve a variety of people which sounds like the sort of worthwhile experience you hope to gain from your undergrad and post-grad experiences! Best of luck in all you do!

  3. Hi Dallas! Okay, I've got to ask...why Russian? What drew you to that language, literature, and culture? My knowledge of Russia is nominal at best but have also found it/them to be interesting. I was a kid during the end of the Cold War and remember all of the USSR = "bad guys" stuff (see Rocky IV, Red Dawn, and a plethora of other '80s movies). I like a lot of fantasy literature myself. I'm a big fan of Terry Brooks. It's funny, you mentioned Terry Goodkind and that reminded me of a former co-worker who was a fan and tried to get me to read the Sword of Truth series. I tried. For over a year I tried to get through that first book and finally gave up. Maybe I should give it another go.

  4. Hi Dallas! I think thats really cool that your major is Russian Language. My dad had to travel there for his work so he tried to learn some of the basic phrases and I always thought about how unique the language sounded. I also think it is cool how you studied abroad! That is one of my goals for this summer because I think it is a once in a lifetime opportunity.

  5. Hi Dallas! Congrats on entering your last year of college. I honestly cannot wait until I am on my last year. Do you have senioritis yet? That is so cool that you met your fiancé from learning and speaking Russian. Do you know where you are going for nursing school yet? I was interesting in becoming a RN back when I was in high school. Now, I am trying to stick with becoming a physician assistant.

  6. Hello Dallas!
Let me first start off by saying that the photo of Malta is gorgeous and I would love to visit there. Also in awe if you for picking a major completely different from nursing! I also enjoy reading although I don't get to read much outside of school and work I would love to check out the series that you mentioned they sound like my time of books!

  7. Hey Dallas!
That is so cool! I struggled with French, I cannot even imagine learning Russian, but at the same time it sounds like so much fun, and very rewarding for you. I am a book worm myself, but hadn't read those. I'll definitely be adding them to my list to check out!!! That's a cool difference to go from Russian to Nursing. I hope you really enjoy it, and wish you luck.

  8. Hi Dallas!
Sounds like you have a really diverse set of things under your belt of what you like to do in your spare time. I like that you have taken a found passion for learning other languages as I find learning other languages to be very fun and interesting. I find when you are trying to learn a new language it makes immerse yourself into their culture so you have a better understanding of why things are the way they are.

  9. Hi Dallas! I think it's so cool that you're studying Russian Language and Literature. I'm studying English and minoring in Spanish, so I have a pretty good idea of how your classes are (except for the language difference, obviously). I love what I study, and I'm glad you do, too! Are there any Russian writers that you'd recommend? Any Russian books in particular?

  10. Hey Dallas!
If you were not going into nursing, what does one do with a Russian Literature degree? I can think of a few applications for it, but most of them involve teaching. I’d be interested to see what types of career paths can come from that. Nursing school was tough, but very rewarding. I initially started out doing nursing before I figured out it is not for me at all. I am one semester short of an RN, but I just can’t do it! I will say though, the best part was interacting and taking care of other people. That part was incredibly worthwhile. I wouldn’t trade those memories for anything. Hopefully you have the same experience and fall in love with being a nurse! We definitely need people out there who’s heart is in it. Good luck with your future plans and have a great rest of your semester!

  11. Hey Dallas!

For some reason, your first photo is not showing up for me. But your major sounds super interesting and also very interesting that you are tying that in with nursing. I think that will help you be an all around student really. Where was the other college you went to and where do you want to go to nursing school at? My best friend is in nursing school right now and loves it. I have considered it myself, but I am currently on the pre-med track so we will see how that goes. Best of luck to you.

  12. Hey Dallas! I really like the plans that you have and think it's super cool that you want to be an RN. I also think it's awesome that you're studying Russian Language and Literature and am curious why it is that you chose that major. The picture you have of Malta is absolutely beautiful by the way. I'm excited to read your stories this semester!

  13. Hey Dallas, nice to meet you! Your first picture didn't load for me which is sad but I think your major and experiences with it sound really cool! How did you pick Russian language, and did you pick it knowing that you wanted to go into the medical field someday, and if so, why? What do you think will be your biggest takeaways from your studies going into nursing school? It sounds like you're a really curious person, which is definitely one of the best traits to have. Best of luck with this class and onwards!
